Coastcare Planting at Doddi's Sun 21 July

Thanks to our Coastcare coordinator Wayne Cable for organising a great day, which he describes in the report below:

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all those that participated and braved the elements. Despite unpredictable cold and wet weather, we had a great turnout for the annual Coastcare sand dune activity at Robert’s Point. People definitely had the conditions in mind and dressed accordingly - if not for rain, for the cold. Fortunately, the weather held off for the duration of the planting.

Numbers were up from last year with volunteers from the community, Mandurah Masters Swimming, Alcoa and coordinators from the City of Mandurah. Many people brought their children to be involved, in what one boy described as planting trees for the future. He would have been all of five or six.

The City Coordinators commented that apart from the National tree planting day, this was the biggest environmental group of planters to help build and maintain the dune vegetation. Just something for everyone to be proud of.

Within two hours, the group had planted nearly two and half thousand seedlings - almost twice as many as last year. A great effort by all, considering all the climbing up and down across the dunes and to and from the trailer parked up on the road.

In appreciation for everyone’s effort the City arranged for healthy sandwiches, dips and fruit. Many thanks to Gerry and Neil, who set up tables and the barbecue, to prepare a healthy sausage sizzle.

Once the weather improves, if the the enthusiasm is there within the Club, maybe we can look at having a beach clean-up in our area of beach, Doddi’s to Bluebay?
