2017 Coogee Jetty to Jetty Swim XX1

The 2017 Coogee Jetty to Jetty Swim was held on a cloudy and cool 12 March morning. The assembled Mandurah Mannas team numbered 28 crack(ed?) swimmers, most of which are in the photos above. (It was necessary to take two photos, not because of the large numbers, it is just the group on right wouldn't come out of the Bouncy Castle in the background when it was time for the team photo.)

It is pleasing to see the popularity of open water swimming among Mandurah members, as a team of 28 follows on from the 33 in our Busselton Jetty Swim team. I am not sure if our Club had the largest team of the Masters Clubs present, but we must have been close.

PS: A big thanks to Alan, Trevor, John and Jane who volunteered to walk 1.5 km to the start and then 1.5 km back carrying everyone's kit. Well done, but next year you might find swimming easier!

First Male Manna out of the water in the 1500 m was Simon Lyons (22:01.4), closely followed by the first Female Manna in Captain Jennifer Rollin-Busby (22:10.4). Two fantastic swims along with 26 other great swims. Well done everyone.

Although the conditions were perfect this year, swimmers didn't benefit from the strong tail wind/current we had last year and as a result this years times probably more accurately represented where everyone is at with their swimming, with times generally a little slower than last year. Accordingly, a special mention should go to Deb Brown and Paul Jacklin, who both beat the time they set last year. Well done Deb and Paul! Another great swim was that of Deb's 13 year old grandson Jeremy (who obviously inherited his Grans swimming skills) and won the "Under 15" 750 swim category in a very slippery 10:31.9. Also deserving of special mention is Helen "2K" Cahill who completed in her first open water swim and in doing so smashed the time set by John for her to qualify for a well earned romantic dinner for two.

It is interesting to note, Kirk entered twice but swam so well the first time did not bother with a second swim.

Now it is time for everyone to concentrate on their pool swimming and our upcoming meet on 2 April. See you at training!
