Mannas Break 4 State Records!
Mandurah were a dominate force in the Golden Groper State Relay Championships at HBF Stadium and came very close to beating host club Claremont, running second overall out of the 13 clubs participating. On a day when 1 National and 9 State records were broken, Mandurah broke more than any other club by setting 4 new State records. In addition, Mandurah's young guns blitzed the field to win the 160-199 Age Group and to top it off our own "Speedy Gonzales" Anwar Moreno won the "Shark" award for the best swimmer. He certainly caught the eye of the ladies on the PA!
The day started with some excitement with a call - Ryan Spencer was delayed in traffic near UWA and running late. His first swim was Event 1 Heat 4. At that time of the call, Heat 1 was about to start. This started Captain Mike nervously pacing about hoping Ryan would make it in time. Then the Mandurah organisational machine kicked in with fellow team member Karen Boyce posted to wait at the door for Ryan to arrive and lead him straight to the marshalling area. All ended well, with Ryan virtually running in the door, down on to the pool deck, stripping off and diving into the water. Later, Ryan commented that the adrenalin of running late was better than a warm up swim.
The headline event was the Open 6x25m "Dash for Cash" Relay with the winner collecting $300 prize money. Look at the News Post titled "2016 State Relay Dash for Cash Video" to watch our team (in Lane 8 nearest the camera) come so close to snatching victory as on the last leg Anwar comes from way behind to nearly catch the Bay View swimmer at the wall!
A video of the 160-199 4x25m Medley is also available in the News Post titled "2016 State Relay 160-199 Medley Video".
Many PB's were set, including some eating pizza in the Claremont club rooms after the swim!
Thank you to Claremont for organising a great event. Thank you to the Mandurah swimmers and supporters and a special thanks to the Mandurah Volunteer Officials and Timekeepers.
What a day! Well done Mandurah!
